Sleek and Shine Elegance

There wasn’t a fly-away to be seen on Sandra Bullock’s Oscar-wining hairstyle. How effortless and polished Sandra looked. The Blinde Side leading lady opted for a sleek side-parted mane with a smooth wave towards the end, slung slightly over one shoulder.

1. Pre-blow-dry, with a moisture treatment as it will repair shine, elasticity and health

2. For red carpet shine when doing the final rinse, run the water as cool as possible over your hair as this will close your cuticle and the shine will be more noticeable.

3. Next part the hair in a deep side part and clip the top half away. Then apply a thermo-smoothing product that works with heat to add softness and shine.

4. Starting at the neck area, blow-dry hair with a large round bristle brush making sure to smooth the ends under as you go. Blow-dry with the nozzle pointing down as this helps to keep the fuzzies at bay. Continue blow-drying the top section until hair is completely smooth.

5. To tame the frizz and add a red carpet lustre give hair a once over with a shine spray. To complete the look, sweep hair behind your ears and spritz with a frizz-fighting light hold hairspray.

Sexy Up Style

If we’re not lusting after Carrie Bradshaw’s signature waves and two-tone highlights it’s her elegant up ‘dos that have us reaching for the texturisng spray and back-combing our way to tousled bun heaven. Case in point: this softly textured chignon Carrie wears in Sex and the City 2, which hairstylist Mandy Lyons created using a number of bulk-building hairpieces wrapped around the bun, giving shape, and polish, to the bulbous ‘do.

For us non-Carrie types, this style can be achieved in a few swift styling steps (without extensions)

Get the look

1. Apply a volumising product to freshly washed damp hair, then blow-dry with your head upside down, using your fingers rather than a brush to maintain a natural texture.

2. Pull your hair back into a ponytail, again with your fingers for a messy, wispy look, then back-comb the ponytail with a wide-tooth comb to add more volume.

3. To finish the look, wrap the ponytail onto itself so it creates a bun, and secure with bobby pins.

Short and Sweet

Short hair styles are popular for several reasons. They’re easier to maintain; the same short style can be varied for a lot of different looks; they keep you cooler during the summer. It’s no wonder shorter hair styles are being seen on more and more women these days.

There are just a few things to keep in mind if you have short hair or are planning to get a major cut soon. Follow these simple tips to avoid making a poor choice:

  • Don’t go too short. Be conservative with that first hair cut. You can always go shorter, but all you can do if it’s too short is wait for it to grow out.
  • Let your face shape dictate the style. Short hair cuts tend to focus more attention on a woman’s facial features, so getting a style that blends nicely with the overall shape of your face is the key. Be sure to get your stylist’s input on this!
  • Bangs can be a woman’s best friend. If you have any facial features that you want to blunt or smooth out, choose one of the short hair cuts with bangs.
  • Get regular trims. Short hair styles for women lose their shape faster than longer styles, so visit your stylist regularly to keep your hair looking great.
